Canterbury Way, Section 01 Cycling
From Canterbury to Reims
The first cycling section of the Via Francigena is spanning two countries, England and France, from Canterbury to Reims. After few kilometres on the flat roads of England, you will cross the Chanel to Calais, and the France. You will first follow the shore, before heading southeast towards the North of France countryside. After visiting the beautiful architecture of Arras and its Main Square, you will cycle along the World War I battlefield, the Somme and the Chemin des Dames (Lady’s Path) until you reach the Champagne Region and its vineyards, source of the worldwide famous Champagne

From Wisques(St Omer) to Arras

Canterbury Way, Section 02 Cycling
From Reims to Besancon
The second section of the cycling Via Francigena is heading across the countryside of France, between two historic cities: Reims and Besancon. The Cathedral of Reims, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites has been for a long time the place where Kings were crowned. Meandering through the Champagne Region, your route will be surrounded by vineyards and little valleys until Besancon. In there, the historic centre and the outstanding Citadelle are the highlights of the city and make Besancon city centre one of the most beautiful of any major towns in France

From Arras to Laon

Canterbury Way, Section 03 Cycling
From Besancon to Lausanne
The third section of the cycling Via Francigena starts from the beautiful old town of Besancon to the magnificent city of Lausanne. After visiting the old centre and the Citadel of Besancon, your route will be more challenging than in the previous sections, as you will partly cross the Jura and the beginning of the Alps. You will enjoy an undulating and green landscape, which will offer you outstanding sceneries until you reach Lausanne, worldwide famous for its natural and architectural beauty, overviewing the Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps

From Laon to Reims
The fourth section of the Via Francigena goes through Champagne region from Laon to Reims, meandering through the farmland and vineyards. On this section, you will first follow the route along the Chemin des Dames, the place of the sadly famous World War I battle. In those first steps, you will notice some military cemeteries and war memorials along the route. But then, you will enter in the worldwide famous Champagne production region. Walking a quite easy way, you will see the source of the elite wine of France, walking a route which leads you to Reims and its Cathedral

Canterbury Way, Section 04 Cycling
From Lausanne to Aosta
Between Switzerland and Italy, the fourth section of the cycling Via Francigena is a challenging trip across the Alps. After several stunning kilometres around the beautiful Lake Geneva, you will head south along the Rhone Valley toward Italy. This part of your trip is quite flat, except for some random steep hills. Your route starts to be more challenging after Aigle, and keep climbing from there to the Great St Bernard Pass. Throughout this History, a lot of army cross the Alps through this route, the more famous being Cesar and Napoleon

From Reims to Bar-sur-Aube
The fifth section of the Via Francigena goes from Reims to Brienne-le-Chateau. After leaving Reims and its outstanding Gothic cathedral, you are now entirely walking on Champagne region roads, or mainly off-road paths. During the first kilometres, the route will follow the river la Marne, until Chalons-en-Champagne (which old name Chalons-sur-Marne may still appear on older signs)

From Bar-sur-Aube to Langres
The sixth section of the Via Francigena goes from Bar-sur-Aube to Langres. While you are leaving the Champagne region, the landscape is slightly changing. Even if it is still rural, you can now see small valleys, as you are heading towards Southeast. The route will cross more woodland than the previous sections, as the farmlands will be rarer. The route starts following the river Aube, passing through the beautiful city of Bar-sur-Aube, and its beautiful mill of Marcasselles. From Langres to Besancon
The seventh section of the Via Francigena goes from Langres to Besancon. In this section you will cross a large number of woodland and forest, especially after Chalindrey, instead of the farmlands or the vineyards in the previous sections. As the off-road options are limited, your route will mainly follow quiet roads. While you are heading Besancon, the landscape become more undulating, and the last stages of your trip have some challenging climbs

From Besancon to Lausanne
The eighth section of the Via Francigena goes from Besancon to Lausanne, spanning two countries, France and Switzerland. The route you will follow between those two large towns is more challenging than every previous section, as you will cross the Jura and a part of the Alps Mountains, and also because of its large length. However, the difficult spots will be concentrated on stretching climbs, and the route is not too hard to follow. The hardest parts are in the next sections
